Louis Querbes

A man inhabited by faith

OLouis Querbes was born in Lyon on August 21, 1793, in the midst of the French Revolution. Baptized in the Church of Saint-Nizier, he grew up under the spiritual protection of the sanctuary of Notre-Dame de Fourvière. These two Lyonnais pillars would lastingly forge his human, Christian, and priestly identity.

The Major Stages of His Life

Man: A Calling Rooted in Piety

From his childhood, he immersed himself in the life of his parish of Saint-Nizier, where he joined the choir and attended clerical school. It was in front of the statue of Our Lady of Grace that, still young, he pronounced a vow of chastity; he would cherish the document bearing witness to this commitment until his last breath.

After his studies at Saint-Irenaeus Seminary, he was ordained a priest in 1816. Appointed as vicar at Saint-Nizier, he distinguished himself through the excellence of his preaching. By becoming administrator of the clerical school, he consolidated what would become the core of his work: the close union between education and liturgy.

The pastor: the builder of Vourles

In 1822, Louis Querbes was appointed parish priest of Vourles. The challenge was immense: after the ravages of the Revolution, everything needed to be rebuilt, both materially and spiritually. With determination, he restored the church and rekindled the faith of the parishioners. Profoundly troubled by the ignorance and lack of education among the children, he began searching for a lasting solution for their upbringing.

The founder: a visionary ahead of his time

To meet the needs of rural schools, he founded an association of catechists, placing it under the patronage of Saint Viator, the 4th-century lector who was the devoted assistant of Bishop Justus of Lyon.

  • 1831 : He obtains diocesan approval for his Society, originally conceived as a group of parish clergy and lay catechists.
  • 1838 : Eager to gain recognition from Rome, he had to resign himself to excluding lay people, as the canonical framework of the time did not permit it. His intuition of a community uniting lay people and religious was far ahead of its time.
  • September 21, 1838: Pope Gregory XVI grants pontifical approval to the religious institute of Parish Clerics or Catechists of Saint Viator.

A Living Legacy

Under his leadership, the Viatorians multiplied schools and parish commitments, first spreading throughout France, then crossing the Atlantic to Canada and the United States. Father Louis Querbes passed away in Vourles on September 1, 1859, leaving behind a vigorous spirit.

Her motto, «Adored and loved be Jesus», remains the epitome of the evangelical spirit he passed on to his successors.

The October 2, 2019, Pope Francis officially recognized the heroism of his virtues by declaring him «Venerable». Today, her spiritual sons and daughters labor and pray fervently for her beatification.
