Founded by Father Louis Querbes, the religious Congregation of the Clerics of Saint Viator received the approval of Archbishop Gaston de Pins (Lyon) in 1831, and then that of Pope Gregory XVI in 1838. Today, the identity and spirit of our community are defined by a Constitution, supported by general and particular regulations.
According to Church law, we are an apostolic, clerical religious congregation of pontifical right. Viatorian life is characterized by an active apostolate that can be exercised throughout the universal Church.
The Congregation is represented by a seal designed according to the wishes of Father Querbes: the «IHS» monogram surmounted by a cross, surrounded by the motto «Sinite parvulos venire ad me» (Let the little children come to me) and inscribed within a crown of thorns.
To fulfill their vocation, the Clerics of Saint Viator prioritize five major orientations:
Faithful to the thinking of Father Querbes, the Viatorians cultivate community life marked by mutual harmony founded on charity. This authentic fraternity excludes all privilege and is based on the participation of each member.
Members generally live in local communities to foster fraternal communion. Each religious is personally responsible for their presence and involvement, which are essential pillars of local dynamism.
Within the Congregation, the pastoral service of authority is organized according to different levels:
In a spirit of co-responsibility, each Viatorian religious collaborates with the established authorities according to their competence. This commitment from everyone ensures the unity and growth of the Congregation.
