Congregation

About Us

Founded by Father Louis Querbes, the religious Congregation of the Clerics of Saint Viator received the approval of Archbishop Gaston de Pins (Lyon) in 1831, and then that of Pope Gregory XVI in 1838. Today, the identity and spirit of our community are defined by a Constitution, supported by general and particular regulations.

According to Church law, we are an apostolic, clerical religious congregation of pontifical right. Viatorian life is characterized by an active apostolate that can be exercised throughout the universal Church.

Identity and Symbols

The Congregation is represented by a seal designed according to the wishes of Father Querbes: the «IHS» monogram surmounted by a cross, surrounded by the motto «Sinite parvulos venire ad me» (Let the little children come to me) and inscribed within a crown of thorns.

  • Equality of members Whether ordained, instituted, or not, all members hold the same position within the Congregation. All profess vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, working together for the common mission.
  • The Viatorian Ring: Received during perpetual profession, this ring is the external sign of belonging to the Congregation. It symbolizes the definitive commitment of a Clerc de Saint-Viateur and his particular devotion to the Mother of God.

The Mission of the Congregation

To fulfill their vocation, the Clerics of Saint Viator prioritize five major orientations:

  1. Christian Education.
  2. The creation and development of Christian communities.
  3. Promoting the quality of liturgical life.
  4. Prioritizing youth.
  5. The constant concern for the poorest.

Viatorian Community Life

Faithful to the thinking of Father Querbes, the Viatorians cultivate community life marked by mutual harmony founded on charity. This authentic fraternity excludes all privilege and is based on the participation of each member.

Members generally live in local communities to foster fraternal communion. Each religious is personally responsible for their presence and involvement, which are essential pillars of local dynamism.

The exercise of authority

Within the Congregation, the pastoral service of authority is organized according to different levels:

  • The General Chapter and the General Directorate.
  • The Provinces.
  • The Regions.
  • Local Communities.

In a spirit of co-responsibility, each Viatorian religious collaborates with the established authorities according to their competence. This commitment from everyone ensures the unity and growth of the Congregation.
